Grandma Ethel's Mashed Turnips recipe.

3 pound turnips, peeled and cut into a large dice
1 stick of butter (1/4 pound.)
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon ground pepper
1/2 teaspoon Salt (additional salt to taste)
1. Peel turnips with a potato peeler. Be careful not to cut too much away. Cut up turnips in to half inch peaces, like you are cutting an apple for serving.
1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat.
2. Add turnips and cook until tender. It takes between 20 to 30 minutes ( A fork should easily cut turnips apart).
3. Drain water from turnips. Put turnips back in pot. Add the butter, sugar, pepper and salt.
4. Use a potato masher to beak apart the turnips and mix in the butter and seasonings. It should look like lumpy mashed potatoes. Taste, add more salt and sugar to taste. Keep warm until time to serve.
